Marching Arts Program Parent Code of Conduct

The success of a marching arts program depends on a positive, respectful, and supportive community. Parents/ guardians and other supporters play a vital role in fostering that environment. This Code of Conduct outlines expectations to ensure constructive experiences for all students, staff, and families.

1. Support the Program’s Mission

  • Encourage your student’s commitment, growth, and teamwork.

  • Promote pride, discipline, and respect for the marching arts program.

  • Reinforce the values of dedication, responsibility, and cooperation at home.

2. Respect Directors and Staff

  • Trust the expertise and decisions of band directors and staff.

  • Allow staff to instruct, correct, and manage students without interference.

  • Address concerns privately and respectfully through appropriate channels.

  • Unless deemed urgent due to a health or safety risk, do not approach directors and staff on competition days with concerns and requests.

3. Promote Positive Communication

  • Communicate in a respectful and constructive manner with directors, staff, students, and other parents.

  • Avoid gossip, negativity, or public criticism (including on social media).

  • Seek clarification before making assumptions.

4. Prioritize Student Well-Being

  • Ensure your student arrives on time, prepared, and well-rested.

  • Encourage proper hydration, nutrition, and physical readiness.

  • Support attendance at rehearsals, performances, and required events.

5. Exhibit Good Sportsmanship

  • Demonstrate respectful behavior at competitions and performances.

  • Support all performers, not just your own student.

  • Refrain from criticizing judges, staff, students, families, and other programs.

6. Follow Event Guidelines

  • Adhere to all rules and schedules during rehearsals, games, and competitions.

  • Respect designated areas for parents and spectators.

  • Avoid interrupting rehearsals or entering restricted zones.

7. Volunteer Responsibly

  • Participate in volunteer opportunities when possible.

  • Fulfill commitments reliably and on time.

  • Work cooperatively with other volunteers and leadership.

8. Support Financial and Fundraising Efforts

  • Meet financial obligations in a timely manner.

  • Actively support fundraising initiatives when possible.

  • Help ensure equal opportunity for all students to participate.

9. Model Respectful Behavior

  • Set a positive example for all students through your actions and words.

  • Treat all participants with fairness, inclusion, and kindness.

  • Celebrate effort, improvement, and teamwork over competition alone.

10. Address Concerns Appropriately

  • Follow the established chain of communication:

    1. Student communicates with section leader or directors or staff whenever possible and appropriate.

    2. Parent contacts director or designated staff with unresolved concerns or those of a highly important or sensitive nature.

  • Direct information/concerns to the appropriate place/people.

Examples of items that go to the directors: Input or questions regarding music, private lessons recommendations, calendar of events, attendance issues, health & safety items, individual student related needs or concerns, etc.

Examples of items that go to the Booster Board: Input or questions related to fees, volunteer opportunities/roles, fundraising, Booster sponsored events, props, uniforms, transportation, etc.

  • Allow adequate time for thoughtful responses and resolution based on the directors, staff, and other volunteer’s scheduled workdays/hours and other commitments.

Acknowledgment

By participating in the HSE HS marching arts program, parents and guardians agree to uphold this Code of Conduct and contribute to a positive, respectful, and successful environment for all.
